Interpreting a Bible Passage

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

Rules of Interpretation

(John 15:1-17)

 

1) Consider the context.

If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the FIRE and burned. vs. 6 (NIV)

 

2) Define key words.

3) Interpret unclear verses with clear ones.
Fruit comes from remaining in Jesus. (vs. 4)
Fruit brings glory to God. (vs. 8)
Fruit brings joy to my life. (vs. 11)

 

4) Look for the most obvious meaning.
Remaining in Jesus produces answered prayer. (vs. 7)
Answered prayer brings glory to God. (John 14:13)
Answered prayer gives me complete joy. (John 16:24)

 

Bottom Line: I bear fruit by asking in prayer!
