Job Title: New Marriage Coach (A Couple’s Volunteer Opportunity)
Ministry: Care & Counseling, New Marriage Coaching
Day(s) of the week: Any
Time of Day: As decided by the Coach and the couple
Time Commitment: Approximately seven hours per couple over several sessions. Perhaps three couples per year at most.
Start Time: As decided by the Coach and the couple.
Type – (individual or family-friendly): Married Couple or Married Individual
Brief Description: A perfect opportunity for a couple seeking to serve God in a deeper way. Coaches are trained in, and then help couples understand, an online relationship assessment (SYMBIS, Saving Your Marriage Before It Starts). This assessment identifies preferences each member of the couple has in the couple’s relationship as they prepare to marry or settle in to the first year of their marriage. The importance of the couple’s Christian beliefs is included in the results.
Coaches work mostly from the easy-to-understand assessment, guiding the couple through the couple’s own discussion of their preferences, and how this knowledge may guide them in their marriage. Coaches are not expected to have the answers, instead coaches encourage dialogue between the couple. Coaches are welcome to share their experiences and opinions.
Requirements: We seek your experience, not expertise! New volunteer Coaches will be trained via a total of three-hours of online-video-based lessons which can be broken into separate sessions. Previously divorced, currently married volunteers are welcomed.
Gifts/Skills Desired: Belief in a God-centered marriage is a must. The ability to read simple charts from the assessment (this is part of the volunteer’s online training) is key to success. An enthusiasm to help new couples begin their marriage well and informed, and to bless them with the benefit of your experience, while watching them blossom is a very real bonus!
